Fly-fishing isn't lmited to standing in a stream
Most people associate fly-fishing with standing in a clear, cold stream catching trout. Jim Laing thinks that's a mistake. "There's a whole other world out there that people just need to discover," said Laing, who is teaching a fly-fishing class at Southwestern Illinois College this month with his fishing partner, Brad Eilering. The pair are on a mission to catch as many species of fish as they can -- from buffalo to muskie to walleye to striper to carp to catfish --within a two-hour radius of St. Louis by using fly-fishing techniques. Laing caught a striper, buffalo, drum, gar, carp and striper on the Big Muddy River below the dam at Rend Lake during a recent trip. Excellent Bass Fishing, Trout Fishing and some Walleye Fishing on ...
The "Grand River Rafting Company" offers guided drift boat fishing on platformed rafts down the Grand River in Paris, Ontario. Fishermen will find abundant smallmouth bass, fall/spring rainbow trout… as well as pike, walleye and big carp. All trips are very reasonably priced. A five hour guided fishing trip for two with lunch is $200 total with a platform raft. Drift boat rafting is the most satisfying experience for fishing the Grand & Nith Rivers. Two fishermen can stand on the platforms and do trout fly fishing or fly fishing for bass with lots of space. Or for those that bait cast, they can sit in deck chairs elevated above the water level to easily see striking fish. The best thing about raft platform fishing is that the speed of the raft allows excellent casting opportunities at each fishing pool.
Humans are well designed for an omnivorous diet
QLast weekend we had cottage guests. We knew they were vegetarians and prepared menus accordingly. All was well until I declared I was going fishing, and invited them to come. This led to a tirade on the evils of fishing — fish have rights too, they feel pain, yada, yada. I kind of lost it, and the rest of the weekend was frosty. Now I feel guilty — and haven't wet a line since! Do you think fishing is really mean, or bad ethics-wise? AI shouldn't touch this one with a ten-foot fly rod. I'm a fisherman, and I eat the fish I catch. Yum! Moreover, the last time I dealt with a fish question (involving a Siamese fighter and a cat) I got more nasty letters than on any subject but gay marriage. But like a trout to the fly, I rise again. Animal rights advocates usually begin with the claim that fish can feel pain.
