Fishing for trout in the Androscoggin River
GORHAM, N.H. - The little 7 1/2 foot, 2-wt. rod bent to the task as the 12-inch rainbow headed back behind the rock from where he had darted to take Steve's fly. The reel complained in a high-pitched squeal about the line being stripped from it's spool. My companion had to be very careful as we fished with only two pound test tippets that can break if you breathe on them wrong. He had set the drag so that the slightest pull would take line; when fishing with such light equipment, the contest becomes art and finesse not horsepower. The small fish was not going to give up easily. Several times he broke the surface of the stream, shaking his head and tossing rainbow-ladened drops of spring-fed water side to side. With practiced ease Steve let the trout tire himself out and then slowly brought him to bay, his handmade catch net with the rubbed finish twinkled in the sunlight as he slid it underneath the waiting fish.
Carson Rivers, Calif, to be planted before Labor Day
BLUE LAKES AREA, CALIF: Dave Kirby of the Woodfords Station (530-694-2930): Both Upper and Lower Blue were fishing strong with a number of limits. Shore fishermen using inflated nightcrawlers or Power Bait.
BRIDGEPORT RESERVOIR, CALIF: Randy Picton of the Bridgeport Reservoir RV Park and Marina (888-377-1677): The fish have moved out of Buckeye Bay into the Rocky Point and Rainbow Point areas of the lake. Bait fishing is still best with nightcrawlers and cheese baits. Vary leader length or fish the top down. Fly fishers: Midges, Damsel larvae, Callibatis or mosquitos are now starting to appear. Trolling is still very good from the Marina north to the dam. Try silver/black Rapalas or red/gold Buoyants. Three to six foot depth, slow troll.
CARSON RIVERS AND NEARBY WATERS, CALIF: There will be two fish plants before Labor Day by Alpine County, in addition to the normal plants by DF&G.
'Big Lake' fishing remains steady
Little has changed on the 'Big Lake' this week, as limit catches of king salmon, along with an occasional lake trout and steelhead, remain common. Although a few nice catches were reported between Holland and Grand Haven, the better fishing has been near Muskegon, White Lake, Pentwater, Ludington and Manistee. Most of the fish are being taken 40-70 feet down, but with an east wind, that could quickly change. Everyone seems to have a favorite spoon or fly, but some of the more productive patterns have been the Moonshine Lures in Flounder-Pounder or Spitfire, mixed veggies, Natural Born Killer (NBK) and the blue or green dolphin. Flasher-fly combos also have been effective with Pickled Sunshine, Snow Ghost and Little Bride being popular color patterns. Downriggers have been used effectively in deep water, but lead-core, wire line and Dipsy/Slide Divers can be used when the boat traffic isn't heavy.
