Fly-fishing isn't lmited to standing in a stream
Most people associate fly-fishing with standing in a clear, cold stream catching trout. Jim Laing thinks that's a mistake. "There's a whole other world out there that people just need to discover," said Laing, who is teaching a fly-fishing class at Southwestern Illinois College this month with his fishing partner, Brad Eilering. The pair are on a mission to catch as many species of fish as they can -- from buffalo to muskie to walleye to striper to carp to catfish --within a two-hour radius of St. Louis by using fly-fishing techniques. Laing caught a striper, buffalo, drum, gar, carp and striper on the Big Muddy River below the dam at Rend Lake during a recent trip. Brook trout were the first salmonid species in Colorado
The brook trout, Salvelinus fontinalis, is an engaging fish. Nearly every trout fisher that I know, young and old alike, has fond memories concerning the beautiful little trout that inhabit most of Colorado's mountain streams. Many anglers remember a brook trout as being first at something or other; their first trout caught from a stream, first trout on a fly rod, first trout on a spinning rod, first trout on something other than a worm, first trout cooked over a campfire beside a moonlit mountain lake, first trout (fill in the blank).
Eastern brook trout are good at being first. Pioneers of a sort, they were the first salmonid species introduced into Colorado, beating the California rainbows by ten years. In late 1872, Denver Alderman, James M. Broadwell, obtained 10,000 fertile brook trout eggs from a fish culturist in Boscobel, Wisconsin and hatched them at his facility located on the South Platte River ten miles north of Denver.
Heat, rain blamed for fish kill
ALTO -- A fish kill last month in Tyler Creek likely was natural -- caused by a long heat wave and a heavy rain the night before, state officials said today. As many as 2,000 brown trout, ranging from 3 to 20 inches, were found floating in Tyler Creek on July 28. The creek feeds into Coldwater River, popular among anglers. Michigan Department of Environmental Quality spokesman Robert McCann said a state investigation showed the heat and rainwater likely depleted oxygen levels in the creek, leading to the kill. .
