West Virginia Trout Fishing

Sports : Fishing report 8/23/06

Bucks Lake Fishing's great! Kids and adults alike are catching fish up in the Mill Creek and Haskins area. Mostly brook trout and rainbow are coming out, with an occasional brown trout. It seems like early morning and late afternoon are the best times to fish. Report courtesy of Bucks Lake Marina, 283- 4243

Lake Almanor Hamilton Branch is worth a try-use nightcrawlers or wooley buggers. The jetties in Prattville are mostly underwater, so try down by the dam with SW 10 Kastmasters or use nightcrawlers with PowerBait. Maybe crickets and mealworm for good-size browns. Trollers are fishing down 10 to 30 feet early morning. There have been reports of trout 3 to 5 pounds on the west side. Try using Uncle Larry's-maybe red/gold speedy shiners. Good reports of salmon being caught by the dam and Hamilton Branch with tails of anchovies.

NOTES: Event features fishing legend

The Blue Grass Chapter of Trout Unlimited will host a special event on Monday, Aug. 14, with fly-fishing legends Dave and Emily Whitlock.

Dave Whitlock is a renowned conservationist, fly tyer, writer and artist.

His presentation and fly casting demonstration will be held at 6 p.m. at the Good Ol' Days Farm, 544 Old Frankfort, in Midway.

Reservations are required, and tickets are $30 per person. For tickets call Holly Phipps at (859) 351-7158, or e-mail: hphipps@ballhomes.com.

"How fortunate for the world of fly fishing that Dave Whitlock was born in the right place, in the right era, and got started on the right road," wrote John Randolph, editor of Fly Fisherman, in 2000. "In a sport where the arcane is standard fare, he makes fly-tying innovations and new fishing techniques practical and understandable.

All systems go for trout season

Finally, thousands of wader-wearing Vermont anglers will have the chance to dance on the grave of Old Man Winter when trout season opens Saturday morning.

"It seems like people have a lot of desire and demand to get outside and do something than going skiing," said Roger Ranz, owner of the Classic Outfitters tackle shop in South Burlington. "Everybody is primed for a good season."

Opening-day trout fishing in Vermont usually means more freezing fingers than fish. Rivers and streams swollen with rain and melting snow and near-freezing water temperatures conspire to make catching trout an iffy proposition.

"The water will be high and it will be cold," said John Hall, a spokesman for the Vermont Fish and Wildlife Department. "The trout are going to be down deep and not as active as they will be later in the year.
