Catching muskies is challenging

If Ohio has an ultimate game fish, that fish would have to be the muskie. They reach sizes of 50-plus pounds, fight ferociously and are temperamental and unpredictable enough to make catching them a challenge comparable to enticing an eight-pound brown trout with a fly.

August can be a tough month to find one, especially if anglers use the same tactics they used in May and June. But even though they might seem to have lockjaw, the water is hot and their metabolism high, so they're eating a lot of forage fish now, and maybe a fishing lure too, if you present it right.

The trout brigade at Walker

Rural tourism encompasses many venues in the Sierra Nevada, but none so popular as fishing during its season. Tallying in at number one for tourism is angling and all of its associated angles, fishing holes and lodging opportunities. And while the Mammoth Lakes region tends to get most of the press locally, the northern reaches of Mono County have their fair share of angling hot spots.

Recently, the DFG trout stocking truck was in the town of Walker and a crowd gathered to help with the delivery. Sam Foster manned the trout brigade at the Walker River-a makeshift line of all ages, each delighted to see trout leave the metal confines of the truck's tanks and land in the water.Walker's trout stocking is repeated in many of the towns and it's not just the local fishing guides who get into the action for the planting locations or the actual trout drops.

Utah's game fish: Rainbow trout

Coloration can vary. Most mature rainbows, however, have a distinguishable red or pink streak on their side from head to tail. The body is a gray-blue or olive above the lateral line and a silver color below. The body, dorsal fin and tail have black or brown dots. Wild rainbow will often have white-tipped fins.

Characteristics

Rainbow trout tend to be shallow to mid-depth "bottom feeders," which makes them easier for shore anglers to catch. They also feed year-round and are a favorite target of ice fishermen. This is probably the most popular fish in the trout family, because it is typically easier to catch, has exceptional strength and is noted for its showy jumping. And, as with all trout, its culinary qualities are excellent. The rainbow, however, does not compete well with other fish, particularly the Utah chub.
