The Batten Kill stocking: A matter of class?
If you've been following the Batten Kill trout stocking controversy, you know that the state, in the name of keeping hungry anglers happy, wants to stock the main stem of the Batten Kill with 1,000 sterile rainbow trout (fish whose sole purpose is to be caught and eaten; sterile so, in theory, the fish won't affect wild populations of brown and brook trout). The conservation group Trout Unlimited claims it's naive to think that such a stocking program won't effect the native fish. On Tuesday night, TU hosted a presentation by ecologist Robert Bachman at Burr and Burton's Riley Theater designed to reinforce its stance on the issue. Bachman, a former fisheries supervisor for the state of Maryland, was an entertaining speaker. A roundish, older gentleman, he projected the distinguished, rumpley aura of a college professor.
Fly Fishing Heals

One way to do this is to get out there on a kayak. Don Sapatkin of the Philadelphia Inquirer reports on the growing popularity of kayak fishing clubs and the benefits of fishing from the boat, www.philly.com. There were many new products showcased at the recent ICAST tackle show in Las Vegas, including the 1415 Z Series Reel and Rod case by Plano. This new hybrid case is lightweight, durable, and feautures enough interior space to accomodate two two-piece rods with reels attached.

ROSSLYNLEE TROUT FISHERY, near Penicuik (01968 679606): Bannockburn Angling Club's 13 anglers took 27 fish with a total weight of 100lb 6oz, giving an average weight per fish of 3lb 11oz. The heaviest bag of the day went to B. Dawson who had four fish for 16lb 13oz including one at 6lb 2oz. Runner up was J. McKee with four for 15lb 15oz with his heaviest at 5lb 2oz. S. Allen had one fish at 5lb 12oz. The water is now cooler and the fish well spread out, now taking dry flies again such as Daddies, CDC's and Hoppers, although Buzzers and lures are also taking a great number of fish. BUTTERSTONE LOCH (01350 724238): Conditions have changed dramatically with water temperatures plummeting from the 20s down to 16oC. Water clarity is nominal at around 1-1.5m depending on the day and the wind conditions stirring up the bottom.
