Craig makes hay while the fish fly

CRAIG, Mont. (AP) The midafternoon heat is intense in this little town and the fishing is a little slow, but Mike Bushly is still upbeat. There's air conditioning inside The Trout Shop, an emporium loaded with cool fishing stuff fly rods, vests, waders, flies, ventilated clothing and a well-stocked deli offering drinks, sandwiches and chilled salads. Even the thick fleece-lined jackets have a perverse retail appeal. And Bushly has plenty more reasons not to sweat. The shop and the small community that surrounds it are awash in anglers ready to spend cold cash chasing big trout. This is our Christmas right now,'' Bushly said. While the stretch of the Missouri River between Holter Dam and Cascade lures plenty of Montanans through the year, the summer months bring anglers from all over the United States and around the world to the broad, cool river.A group of anglers from France just wrapped up seven days of fishing on the Missouri.

FISHING DESTINATIONS: NEW ZEALAND: Screaming reels in kiwi land

TURANGI, New Zealand - Tyler Shoberg, a Herald copy editor, recently spent two weeks traveling through New Zealand with his girlfriend, Erin Dixon, who was studying abroad. The following story is from a daylong guided fishing trip the pair took June 23 in New Zealand. Shoberg's parents gave him the trip as a present for graduating from UND.

Twenty-five minutes: That's how long it took to land the first fish of the day.

I'd never fought anything that long back home in Minnesota. My parents, my sister, the school bully; all 15 minutes, tops. But when the tired-out rainbow trout finally succumbed to the bend of the rod and the strain in my back, Will Kemp, my guide, tapped the face of his watch.

"Twenty-five minutes," he grinned. "She's quite the pig, eh?"

With the fish safely nestled inside a landing net, Kemp popped a clip on the handle and used the built-in scale to calculate the weight.

On the Ridge Pool Keven and Nial Tonge from Co.Meath had 3 salmon, best at 4.75 lbs. and Armagh anglers Des Moen and Jim Browne had a total bag of 7 fish. Down had 3 fish each 2 of which were released and a decent 6.80 lbs. grilse was landed by Gerard Thomas from Armagh.
