On Fishing 8/22
For years, the Division of Wildlife Resources, the U.S. Forest Service, other government and private agencies, along with interest angling groups have studied the possibility of placing native Bonneville cutthroat trout back into the Diamond Fork drainage. This restorative step with this sensitive species may keep it off the endangered species list and at the same time provide anglers with yet another quality high-mountain fishing opportunity. On August 16, 2006 a 21-mile section of the Diamond Fork River (beginning roughly 5 miles above the Palmyra Campground) was treated with rotenone to remove mainly brown trout from the water. This move was designed to give the cutthroats a fresh, competition free environment in which to reestablish its population. The natural poison was introduced via "drip barrels" placed strategically along the path of the river.
Excellent Bass Fishing, Trout Fishing and some Walleye Fishing on ...
The "Grand River Rafting Company" offers guided drift boat fishing on platformed rafts down the Grand River in Paris, Ontario. Fishermen will find abundant smallmouth bass, fall/spring rainbow trout… as well as pike, walleye and big carp. All trips are very reasonably priced. A five hour guided fishing trip for two with lunch is $200 total with a platform raft. Drift boat rafting is the most satisfying experience for fishing the Grand & Nith Rivers. Two fishermen can stand on the platforms and do trout fly fishing or fly fishing for bass with lots of space. Or for those that bait cast, they can sit in deck chairs elevated above the water level to easily see striking fish. The best thing about raft platform fishing is that the speed of the raft allows excellent casting opportunities at each fishing pool.
Fish stocking near Rollinsville Pass
Driving down from the Forest Lakes area on the Rollinsville Pass road, we were lucky to come upon a Colorado Division of Wildlife truck that was about to stock Yankee Doodle Lake recently. The truck had driven from the Rifle fish hatchery that morning and driver welcomed our interest and help with the fish delivery. Rifle Falls Hatchery is the largest trout production hatchery in Colorado. Yankee Doodle Lake is a beautiful spot surrounded by wild flowers. She brought 2500 Rainbow trout that were up to 10 inches in length. Nearly every fish was safely delivered and the driver noted that it was common for them to arrive safely. Since the lake has a steep bank, a tube was fashioned for the actual delivery. Many of the fish upon arriving at the lake actually tried to swim back upstream into the tube and had to be encouraged to "explore" the lake.
