Kingennie return provides some testing encounters
IT'S been some time since I last visited Forbes of Kingennie in Dundee and what a transformation - it has been turned into a complete fishing village. Apart from the specimen pond, my own personal favourite, there are several other ponds which include game and coarse angling. Although by no means big, the specimen pond can be quite a testing casting experience for the less able of anglers but cooler conditions and clear water have made the trout start to chase the odd lure once again. .
Fly fishing reeling in more women
COPPER MOUNTAIN - Standing on a rock outcropping that juts into Officer's Gulch Lake, Char Bloom resembled an orchestra conductor the moment before a concert. Instead of lifting a wand, though, she waved a fly fishing rod.
With an audience of women surrounding her, Bloom brought her rod back and then gracefully rocked it forward, throwing her line into the lake with just the perfect amount of arch. The fly gently landed on the tranquil lake, creating only the tiniest ripple.
"Make sure the fly hits the water first and not the rest of your line," Bloom said. "Otherwise, you'll scare the fish away."
Too late: The 17 female anglers watching Bloom were wearing jingling beads around their waists and they were decked out from head to toe in bright colors such as turquoise and hot pink.
FISH FORECAST: Weather playing role in local derby
It's the final weekend for the Lake Ontario Counties Trout and Salmon Derby and some of the top anglers are waiting with baited breath (pun intended) to see what's going to happen with the weather. The key seems to be how intense it will be based on the intensity of Ernesto and what track the storm will take. Most anglers are hoping that it steers clear of the Great Lakes and the derby can finish up as planned — with some impressive catches being taken to the scales. However, you're better off checking things out for yourself to see if it's fishable or not this weekend. Hard northeast blows last weekend and at mid-week has moved water around and created strong currents in the lake. Cold water at the pier heads last weekend produced the first salmon of the year off the pier heads in Olcott according to Wes Walker at The Slippery Sinker.
