Failed angler confesses life of piscatorial flops
Somewhere between the cloudy waters of Chub Ditch and blue ribbon mountain streams, I took a wrong turn. Learning to fish was supposed to hone character and cleanse the soul. There is nothing more masculine, more all-American, more Montanan than becoming an expert angler. Here follows the confession of an angler left behind. The Huck Finn I once was never outgrew fishing but fishing outgrew him. Fishing introduced me to a new world, a world of flash and wonder, murky mystery and electric connections. The watery world interfaced with this ocean of air at the surface of every creek, pond and river. Fishing line was the telegraph wire that communicated between the two. My first freshwater rig consisted of a willow pole, three yards of line, a bobber and a hook. I transmitted a cricket and waited for an answer.
CAST 2006 is another huge success
Some of my fondest childhood memories are of spending summer mornings fishing with my father on Strawberry. For 29 groups of physically and mentally challenged youth and their companions, the annual C.A.S.T. (Catch A Special Thrill) event creates similar memories for participants and volunteers alike. This year's event was held last Saturday on the Soldier Creek side of Strawberry, and as always those who participated counted their time on the water as a once-in-a-lifetime experience. "Almost all of the kids caught at least one fish," said Valerie Harrison, the event organizer. But of course, catching fish was secondary to the excitement participants felt as they cruised across the glassy smooth water in boats of every shape and size, in search of the sometimes elusive cutthroat and rainbow trout.
Northwest Angling Reports for Week ending 13th August 2006
Very low water levels again impacted on anglers fishing the Moy system. The Moy had a reported catch of 321 salmon for the week with the tidal section of the river fishing best. On the Weir Pool in Ballina Seamus McEleney from Donegal had 2 fish which he released, George Heuston also from Donegal had 3, best at 4.74 lbs. and Gareth Byrne from Offaly landed 4 grilse, best at 5.7 lbs. On the Ridge Pool Keven and Nial Tonge from Co.Meath had 3 salmon, best at 4.75 lbs. and Armagh anglers Des Moen and Jim Browne had a total bag of 7 fish. Visiting Belgian angler Bernard Mattiez also did well on the Ridge Pool where he caught 2 nice grilse. On the Cathedral Beat, Ken Millsopp and Alan Hannan from Co. Down had 3 fish each 2 of which were released and a decent 6.80 lbs. grilse was landed by Gerard Thomas from Armagh.
