Fishing: Creek cleanup will not happen overnight
Fifty years ago, Green Drakes disappeared from Spring Creek in Centre County after someone from a Penn State University chemistry lab dumped cyanide into the water. The big mayflies haven't been seen there since. "A bunch of us tried to reintroduce them by planting nymphs in the stream and duns in the foliage," said Dan Shields, of Lamont, Pa., who wrote about the incident in his book "Fly Fishing Pennsylvania's Spring Creek." "We even netted thousands of spinners from another stream, but they never took hold. We tried for three or four years, but it was no use." Although the recent train derailment and chemical spill on Sinnemahoning Portage Creek in Mc-Kean and Cameron counties was much bigger and more deadly, experts are cautiously optimistic that insects will rebound on what had been pristine, wild trout water, but predict a long, slow process.
Teen angler beats his dad and wins another prize
Fisherman's luck perhaps but young Robert Andrews has been a prize-winner at the Kinloch Fishing Competition for three years running.
Robert has been fishing "since I was in nappies" and has entered the popular Taupo competition each year since 2004.
So far he's always come home with a prize.
This year, the 13-year-old from Mokai, north of Taupo, caught eight trout and won the prize for the Condition Factor in the secondary school age category.
Among his prizes were a new fishing rod, sleeping bag and backpack.
"I love fishing, it's fun and a great sport," Robert said. .

For years, the Division of Wildlife Resources, the U.S. Forest Service, other government and private agencies, along with interest angling groups have studied the possibility of placing native Bonneville cutthroat trout back into the Diamond Fork drainage. This restorative step with this sensitive species may keep it off the endangered species list and at the same time provide anglers with yet another quality high-mountain fishing opportunity. On August 16, 2006 a 21-mile section of the Diamond Fork River (beginning roughly 5 miles above the Palmyra Campground) was treated with rotenone to remove mainly brown trout from the water. This move was designed to give the cutthroats a fresh, competition free environment in which to reestablish its population. The natural poison was introduced via "drip barrels" placed strategically along the path of the river.
