Kingennie return provides some testing encounters
IT'S been some time since I last visited Forbes of Kingennie in Dundee and what a transformation - it has been turned into a complete fishing village. Apart from the specimen pond, my own personal favourite, there are several other ponds which include game and coarse angling. Although by no means big, the specimen pond can be quite a testing casting experience for the less able of anglers but cooler conditions and clear water have made the trout start to chase the odd lure once again. .
FISHING DESTINATIONS: NEW ZEALAND: Screaming reels in kiwi land
TURANGI, New Zealand - Tyler Shoberg, a Herald copy editor, recently spent two weeks traveling through New Zealand with his girlfriend, Erin Dixon, who was studying abroad. The following story is from a daylong guided fishing trip the pair took June 23 in New Zealand. Shoberg's parents gave him the trip as a present for graduating from UND. Twenty-five minutes: That's how long it took to land the first fish of the day. I'd never fought anything that long back home in Minnesota. My parents, my sister, the school bully; all 15 minutes, tops. But when the tired-out rainbow trout finally succumbed to the bend of the rod and the strain in my back, Will Kemp, my guide, tapped the face of his watch. "Twenty-five minutes," he grinned. "She's quite the pig, eh?" With the fish safely nestled inside a landing net, Kemp popped a clip on the handle and used the built-in scale to calculate the weight.
Umpqua salmon fishing improving
Chinook salmon and coho have been caught in the Umpqua River estuary in the last couple of weeks. Upriver, smallmouth bass fishing has been reported as excellent in both the main Umpqua and the South Umpqua. On the North Umpqua, the summer steelhead fishing is improving. Following are reports from sources who deal with the fisheries on a daily basis. "I'm been hearing some pretty good reports about salmon being caught in the 101 bridge area. I've heard there have been some 30- to 40-pounders caught. Apparently the fish are in the bay. People are trolling herring for them. "The ocean has been rough for salmon fishing. "Up here in the Elkton area, the bass fishing has been really good, and there has been a few steelhead going through.
