Sports : Fishing report 8/23/06

Bucks Lake Fishing's great! Kids and adults alike are catching fish up in the Mill Creek and Haskins area. Mostly brook trout and rainbow are coming out, with an occasional brown trout. It seems like early morning and late afternoon are the best times to fish. Report courtesy of Bucks Lake Marina, 283- 4243

Lake Almanor Hamilton Branch is worth a try-use nightcrawlers or wooley buggers. The jetties in Prattville are mostly underwater, so try down by the dam with SW 10 Kastmasters or use nightcrawlers with PowerBait. Maybe crickets and mealworm for good-size browns. Trollers are fishing down 10 to 30 feet early morning. There have been reports of trout 3 to 5 pounds on the west side. Try using Uncle Larry's-maybe red/gold speedy shiners. Good reports of salmon being caught by the dam and Hamilton Branch with tails of anchovies.

FISHING DESTINATIONS: NEW ZEALAND: Screaming reels in kiwi land

TURANGI, New Zealand - Tyler Shoberg, a Herald copy editor, recently spent two weeks traveling through New Zealand with his girlfriend, Erin Dixon, who was studying abroad. The following story is from a daylong guided fishing trip the pair took June 23 in New Zealand. Shoberg's parents gave him the trip as a present for graduating from UND.

Twenty-five minutes: That's how long it took to land the first fish of the day.

I'd never fought anything that long back home in Minnesota. My parents, my sister, the school bully; all 15 minutes, tops. But when the tired-out rainbow trout finally succumbed to the bend of the rod and the strain in my back, Will Kemp, my guide, tapped the face of his watch.

"Twenty-five minutes," he grinned. "She's quite the pig, eh?"

With the fish safely nestled inside a landing net, Kemp popped a clip on the handle and used the built-in scale to calculate the weight.

Humans are well designed for an omnivorous diet

QLast weekend we had cottage guests. We knew they were vegetarians and prepared menus accordingly. All was well until I declared I was going fishing, and invited them to come. This led to a tirade on the evils of fishing — fish have rights too, they feel pain, yada, yada. I kind of lost it, and the rest of the weekend was frosty. Now I feel guilty — and haven't wet a line since! Do you think fishing is really mean, or bad ethics-wise?

AI shouldn't touch this one with a ten-foot fly rod. I'm a fisherman, and I eat the fish I catch. Yum! Moreover, the last time I dealt with a fish question (involving a Siamese fighter and a cat) I got more nasty letters than on any subject but gay marriage. But like a trout to the fly, I rise again.

Animal rights advocates usually begin with the claim that fish can feel pain.
