Londoner submits to public fish-slapping
Inspired by a Monty Python sketch, a charity fund-raiser in London with an odd-ball sense of humour submitted himself on Saturday to being slapped in the face with a couple of wet fish.Ben Fillmore (24) turned up at Speaker's Corner in Hyde Park in central London as promised at high noon to be publicly humiliated with two fresh Scottish rainbow trout at the hands of student Lucy Berry (23).She had paid £210 on internet auction site eBay to be part of Fillmore's quest to raise a total of £10 000 for the Stroke Association."It felt OK," Fillmore confided to reporters afterwards. "My face feels a bit taut and the fish really stinks. It felt very slimy -- but it was definitely worth it."The stunt was an homage to "the fish-slapping dance" in which John Cleese and Michael Palin, both in safari outfits, take turns whacking each other with fish in a classic episode from television's Monty Python's Flying Circus.Berry has so far raised £2 000 pounds for the charity, which helped his mother survive a stroke six years ago.He said he has more stunts in the pipeline -- as well as a project to scale Mount Everest.
'Big Lake' fishing remains steady
Little has changed on the 'Big Lake' this week, as limit catches of king salmon, along with an occasional lake trout and steelhead, remain common. Although a few nice catches were reported between Holland and Grand Haven, the better fishing has been near Muskegon, White Lake, Pentwater, Ludington and Manistee. Most of the fish are being taken 40-70 feet down, but with an east wind, that could quickly change. Everyone seems to have a favorite spoon or fly, but some of the more productive patterns have been the Moonshine Lures in Flounder-Pounder or Spitfire, mixed veggies, Natural Born Killer (NBK) and the blue or green dolphin. Flasher-fly combos also have been effective with Pickled Sunshine, Snow Ghost and Little Bride being popular color patterns. Downriggers have been used effectively in deep water, but lead-core, wire line and Dipsy/Slide Divers can be used when the boat traffic isn't heavy.
Fly fishing workshop offered
8/30/2006 - Alberto Rey will present Fly Fishing in the Great Lakes at the Adams Art Gallery Saturday from 10 a.m. to noon. All proceeds will benefit the gallery.
Rey is an accomplished fisherman as well as an educator and nationally recognized artist. His articles and artwork have been on the covers and in the pages of Grays Sporting Journal, Art of Angling, Fish and Fly Magazine and Buffalo Spree.
The Fly Fishing in the Great Lakes is based on Reys research, background and experience. He is an Orvis Endorsed Fly Fishing Guide and the founder and director of SAREP Youth Fly Fishing Program.
Weather permitting, a portion of the presentation may be held in Washington Park.
The cost for the workshop is $30 for adults and $20 for children.
