Sports : Fishing report 8/23/06
Bucks Lake Fishing's great! Kids and adults alike are catching fish up in the Mill Creek and Haskins area. Mostly brook trout and rainbow are coming out, with an occasional brown trout. It seems like early morning and late afternoon are the best times to fish. Report courtesy of Bucks Lake Marina, 283- 4243 Lake Almanor Hamilton Branch is worth a try-use nightcrawlers or wooley buggers. The jetties in Prattville are mostly underwater, so try down by the dam with SW 10 Kastmasters or use nightcrawlers with PowerBait. Maybe crickets and mealworm for good-size browns. Trollers are fishing down 10 to 30 feet early morning. There have been reports of trout 3 to 5 pounds on the west side. Try using Uncle Larry's-maybe red/gold speedy shiners. Good reports of salmon being caught by the dam and Hamilton Branch with tails of anchovies.
'Big Lake' fishing remains steady
Little has changed on the 'Big Lake' this week, as limit catches of king salmon, along with an occasional lake trout and steelhead, remain common. Although a few nice catches were reported between Holland and Grand Haven, the better fishing has been near Muskegon, White Lake, Pentwater, Ludington and Manistee. Most of the fish are being taken 40-70 feet down, but with an east wind, that could quickly change. Everyone seems to have a favorite spoon or fly, but some of the more productive patterns have been the Moonshine Lures in Flounder-Pounder or Spitfire, mixed veggies, Natural Born Killer (NBK) and the blue or green dolphin. Flasher-fly combos also have been effective with Pickled Sunshine, Snow Ghost and Little Bride being popular color patterns. Downriggers have been used effectively in deep water, but lead-core, wire line and Dipsy/Slide Divers can be used when the boat traffic isn't heavy.
Fly Fishing Federation a great teaching group
Last week, Yours Truly was privileged to sit in on the fly tying workshop presented by members of the San Juan Fly Fishing Federation. Not only are Ray Hood, Willis Knight, and Jon Haxton great fly tiers, they are truly good people. In fact, I have been duly impressed with the Fly Fishing Federation as a whole. The entire group is friendly, plus they offer free fly fishing clinics, casting seminars, and tying demonstrations. And, they schedule monthly group fishing trips, volunteer to work with children and charitable projects while regularly having highway cleanup projects near the Quality Waters section on the San Juan River. The club is truly service-minded and the members' love for fly fishing shines brightly through every thing they do. It was not until recently, last winter in fact, that I joined the Federation.
