Fishing Report

It's quickly turned into a strange late-summer on the Columbia River, with salmon angling at Buoy 10 a near-total bust, yet the chinook bite pretty good at several popular upstream locations.

Here's how it was at Buoy 10 in the past few days, based on sampling by the Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife: Sunday, 327 anglers with four chinook and 10 coho; Monday, 99 anglers with three chinook and eight coho; Tuesday, 99 anglers with two chinook, three coho.

Most years, the bite at Buoy 10, the name for the lower 16 miles of the Columbia, is much, much better than farther upstream.

The slow start at Buoy 10 in mid-August was written off to the chinook being late, but by now the bite upstream and counts at Bonneville Dam make it obvious the salmon are on their way; they're just not biting like they normally do in the estuary.

Fly Fishing Federation a great teaching group

Last week, Yours Truly was privileged to sit in on the fly tying workshop presented by members of the San Juan Fly Fishing Federation. Not only are Ray Hood, Willis Knight, and Jon Haxton great fly tiers, they are truly good people.

In fact, I have been duly impressed with the Fly Fishing Federation as a whole. The entire group is friendly, plus they offer free fly fishing clinics, casting seminars, and tying demonstrations. And, they schedule monthly group fishing trips, volunteer to work with children and charitable projects while regularly having highway cleanup projects near the Quality Waters section on the San Juan River. The club is truly service-minded and the members' love for fly fishing shines brightly through every thing they do.

It was not until recently, last winter in fact, that I joined the Federation.

My other life - Robert Croft

I'm basically a boy from the country, from Hendy in West Wales. It's something I started doing in those long school holidays in the summer. My grandfather fished, my father fished and it just gets handed down like playing rugby in Wales is handed down from generation to generation.

What was your first fish?
Like a cricketer I started with a net. My parents took me down to the local river and I caught a trout. I didn't know at the time that they had taken out it of the freezer earlier. But I didn't care I was, er, hooked after that.

What sort of fishing do you specialise in?
Although I do some sea fishing I mainly fly fish. A friend of mine owns a stretch on the River Tawe and that's where you will see me going after salmon and sea trout.

What has been your biggest catch?
My biggest fish to date was a beautiful 15lb salmon I landed last September at a stretch of river in Capel Dewi in Carmarthen - one of the most prolific sea trout rivers in the UK.
