We were returning from a trip to Nashville and found ourselves with an extra day and nothing planned. With the town of Rockbridge only a few miles out of the way, we decided to spend some time catching big rainbow trout. This was the second time we'd made the trip to Rockbridge but the first time we'd made it together. Karen and I were introduced to the Rainbow Trout and Game Ranch while attending Dave and Emily Whitlock's fly fishing school.
All systems go for trout season
Finally, thousands of wader-wearing Vermont anglers will have the chance to dance on the grave of Old Man Winter when trout season opens Saturday morning.
"It seems like people have a lot of desire and demand to get outside and do something than going skiing," said Roger Ranz, owner of the Classic Outfitters tackle shop in South Burlington. "Everybody is primed for a good season."
Opening-day trout fishing in Vermont usually means more freezing fingers than fish. Rivers and streams swollen with rain and melting snow and near-freezing water temperatures conspire to make catching trout an iffy proposition.
"The water will be high and it will be cold," said John Hall, a spokesman for the Vermont Fish and Wildlife Department. "The trout are going to be down deep and not as active as they will be later in the year.
Fly fishing workshop offered
8/30/2006 - Alberto Rey will present Fly Fishing in the Great Lakes at the Adams Art Gallery Saturday from 10 a.m. to noon. All proceeds will benefit the gallery.
Rey is an accomplished fisherman as well as an educator and nationally recognized artist. His articles and artwork have been on the covers and in the pages of Grays Sporting Journal, Art of Angling, Fish and Fly Magazine and Buffalo Spree.
The Fly Fishing in the Great Lakes is based on Reys research, background and experience. He is an Orvis Endorsed Fly Fishing Guide and the founder and director of SAREP Youth Fly Fishing Program.
Weather permitting, a portion of the presentation may be held in Washington Park.
The cost for the workshop is $30 for adults and $20 for children.
