Conditions right for fly fishing

The lower main-stem Skagit from about Sedro Woolley down, and its South Fork, are producing some nice fish, according to Bob Ferber at Holiday Market Sports in Burlington (360-757-4361), along with a few smaller Dolly Varden. Fly fishermen are scoring on yellow or black number 6 Knudson spiders, bucktail coachmen, and various minnow-imitating patterns, Ferber said. Popular spin-type lures include number 1 or 2 Mepps or Vibrax spinners in reds, chartareuse, brass/red and small Dick Nite spoons with a light split shot. Worms are always popular.

"With the river as clear as it is right now, flies and hardware will probably outfish bait," Ferber said. "And you want to look for 'softer' water than you would fish for steelhead - the current edges, eddy edges, sloughs, and snaggy spots. Basically off to the edges of the main river."

There's a rough launch for small boats near the Conway bridge, he said; one above Gardner Bar on the upstream edge of Burlington, off Gardner Road; and one below the bridge in downtown old Mount Vernon, above the forks and above Spud Bar.

Brook trout were the first salmonid species in Colorado

The brook trout, Salvelinus fontinalis, is an engaging fish. Nearly every trout fisher that I know, young and old alike, has fond memories concerning the beautiful little trout that inhabit most of Colorado's mountain streams. Many anglers remember a brook trout as being first at something or other; their first trout caught from a stream, first trout on a fly rod, first trout on a spinning rod, first trout on something other than a worm, first trout cooked over a campfire beside a moonlit mountain lake, first trout (fill in the blank).

Eastern brook trout are good at being first. Pioneers of a sort, they were the first salmonid species introduced into Colorado, beating the California rainbows by ten years. In late 1872, Denver Alderman, James M. Broadwell, obtained 10,000 fertile brook trout eggs from a fish culturist in Boscobel, Wisconsin and hatched them at his facility located on the South Platte River ten miles north of Denver.

Fishing the Carson River

Every fisherman will tell you that they have a special trick that works for them. We got up early this morning and met Johnson Lane resident David Small just north of Broken Dam to do a little fishing. David says his trick is a 4-pound test line with a Panther Martin lure that has a gold flasher. He worked with my daughter Jenee and showed her how to cast out and then immediately start reeling the lure back in. If you cast upstream, you reel in kind of fast. If you cast downstream you let the river provide the action and you reel in slower. What a wonderful fishing trip this was. My daughter caught and released three fish. I lost count after David caught and released 15. All the fish they caught were much too little for dinner.

We were fishing with several other fishermen today.
