Fishing with Cataline
This fishing excursion follows in the tracks of the well-known trailbrazer and packer, known as Cataline. He was born Jean Caux, in the Catalonia region near the Spanish/French border, and blazed trails from central to northern British Columbia, Canada. The numerous gold rushes and homesteaders kept him busy supplying their camps during the 1860's, when much of the country was untouched. He was able to experience an untouched wilderness full of fish and game. This region still has some of the best rainbow trout fishing on the continent; moose, bear, caribou, mountain goats and sheep are plentiful too in this mountain region. My recent excursion followed in his footsteps from Clinton, B.C., in the south to Babine Lake in the north. He traveled on foot with a pack train of as many as 80 mules, following old Indian and wild game trails where he could, and "bushwacked" where he couldn't.
State weighs changes for new waterfowling season
The Illinois Department of Natural Resources recently held a series of meetings throughout the state to discuss proposed changes for the 2006-2007 waterfowling season. After weighing the input, the DNR is recommending "...waterfowl hunting dates and waterfowl hunting zone lines for the next five years that reflect an extensive review of scientific data, waterfowl hunter survey data and comments from sporting organizations, waterfowl hunters and other constituents during the last eight months," IDNR Acting Director Sam Flood said, adding that the state's proposals include: An elimination of Canada goose hunting harvest quotas in Illinois beginning this fall. 79-day Canada goose seasons in the North and Central Zones and a 56-day. Canada goose season in the South Zone with a daily limit of two geese in all zones.
Like shooting fish in a barrell
I just got home from a week-long road trip and I think I may have found some of the best fishing on the planet. That is if you like yanking on halibut until your arms feel like they're full of wet cement and hooking so many coho salmon that it seems a little like bluegill fishing out of a 5-gallon bucket.And the best part of the deal is this angling paradise is relatively close.My base of operations was Juneau, Alaska which is a short three-hour flight from Sacramento, with a stop in Seattle. On assignment for Fish Alaska Magazine, my orders were to explore and report back on the fishing opportunities available in the waters within easy striking distance of Alaska's capital city.On day one, my assistant Khevin and I rented a car and buzzed around the Juneau road system, where we found massive amounts of salmon in all the small streams we visited, catching more than we could count on fly and conventional tackle.
