The Batten Kill stocking: A matter of class?

If you've been following the Batten Kill trout stocking controversy, you know that the state, in the name of keeping hungry anglers happy, wants to stock the main stem of the Batten Kill with 1,000 sterile rainbow trout (fish whose sole purpose is to be caught and eaten; sterile so, in theory, the fish won't affect wild populations of brown and brook trout).

The conservation group Trout Unlimited claims it's naive to think that such a stocking program won't effect the native fish. On Tuesday night, TU hosted a presentation by ecologist Robert Bachman at Burr and Burton's Riley Theater designed to reinforce its stance on the issue.

Bachman, a former fisheries supervisor for the state of Maryland, was an entertaining speaker. A roundish, older gentleman, he projected the distinguished, rumpley aura of a college professor.

Umpqua salmon fishing improving

Chinook salmon and coho have been caught in the Umpqua River estuary in the last couple of weeks.

Upriver, smallmouth bass fishing has been reported as excellent in both the main Umpqua and the South Umpqua. On the North Umpqua, the summer steelhead fishing is improving.

Following are reports from sources who deal with the fisheries on a daily basis.

"I'm been hearing some pretty good reports about salmon being caught in the 101 bridge area. I've heard there have been some 30- to 40-pounders caught. Apparently the fish are in the bay. People are trolling herring for them.

"The ocean has been rough for salmon fishing.

"Up here in the Elkton area, the bass fishing has been really good, and there has been a few steelhead going through.

Cool nights bring trout back to the forefront

Hearing there is 60-degree water in the streams is more than enough information for a bonafide trout nut to stumble through the closet or garage to look for fly and spin tackle abandoned after the spring stock.

Rivers are low, clear and finally cool thanks to night time temperatures that have provided a bit of chill to the drink.

Bass fishing has taken a backseat for many, as fishing has just experienced a revival for juicy holdover trout.

The morning bite has been steady with nymphs and midges and again at dusk as big Isonychia, hexagenia and yellow drakes rise from the water and into the sky. Surface action at this time can be stellar, as these are some of the biggest flies of the year. A big Adams or Olive in a size 10 will mimic the general outline and produce.
