The Batten Kill stocking: A matter of class?

If you've been following the Batten Kill trout stocking controversy, you know that the state, in the name of keeping hungry anglers happy, wants to stock the main stem of the Batten Kill with 1,000 sterile rainbow trout (fish whose sole purpose is to be caught and eaten; sterile so, in theory, the fish won't affect wild populations of brown and brook trout).

The conservation group Trout Unlimited claims it's naive to think that such a stocking program won't effect the native fish. On Tuesday night, TU hosted a presentation by ecologist Robert Bachman at Burr and Burton's Riley Theater designed to reinforce its stance on the issue.

Bachman, a former fisheries supervisor for the state of Maryland, was an entertaining speaker. A roundish, older gentleman, he projected the distinguished, rumpley aura of a college professor.

My wife Karen and I were winding along Missouri highway 5 east of Springfield, being careful not to miss our turn.

We were returning from a trip to Nashville and found ourselves with an extra day and nothing planned. With the town of Rockbridge only a few miles out of the way, we decided to spend some time catching big rainbow trout.

This was the second time we'd made the trip to Rockbridge but the first time we'd made it together. Karen and I were introduced to the Rainbow Trout and Game Ranch while attending Dave and Emily Whitlock's fly fishing school.

Bird flu puts small dent in flyfishing business

DELTA, Colo. — Lines of long, narrow, white buildings spread out across the ranch in the lush, green farmland of western Colorado. Inside are chickens, up to 85,000 in each of the dimly lit coops with interiors that feel like greenhouses and smell like outhouses.

This is Tom Whiting's lab, where he creates new kinds of chickens — or, more specifically, chicken feathers.

Whiting is no mad scientist. He's a poultry geneticist and his company, Whiting Farms, is the world's largest producer of the chicken hackle that fly fishermen use for tying flies. Whiting keeps a watchful eye on his birds, from the time the chicks are hatched until their feathers are packaged and shipped to companies in roughly 40 countries.

With the operation broken up among three ranches, Whiting has biological security from poultry diseases and protection from natural disasters that might wipe out his entire line.
