TROUT FISHING IN AMERICA: "My Best Day"

In the 30 years that Trout Fishing in America has been making children's music, bassist Keith Grimwood says one question always comes up: "What is the stupidest song you guys have ever written?" Turns out it's "Sailing," a clever little sea chanty that's big on wordplay.

From a "dumb-floundered" pirate to "marooned" sailors aboard colliding cargo ships hauling red and brown paint, "Sailing" is just one of 15 songs featured on the thunderous concert CD from the smart, musically sophisticated duo of Grimwood and guitarist Ezra Idlet.

Their collaboration on "My Best Day" is not to be missed.

Recorded before a live audience in Arkansas earlier this year, the album is steeped in the acoustic folk tradition. At the same time, it expands into .

On the fly: Fish chix

Members of the Colorado Women Flyfishers made what is becoming an annual pilgrimage to the Pan, where some seriously dedicated anglers were in the river from morning til night and beyond.

Two guys returning to their vehicle on the upper river at dusk on Saturday night found more than a few women staking out a spot for the anticipated rusty spinner fall. The evening feeding frenzy was memorable on Friday night, club members assured anyone who wasnt there (this angler, for one).

The spinners, pale morning duns that fall dead into the water after laying their eggs at dusk, are apparently delectible to trout. The pockets of calm water along the bank can boil with glutonous fish during a spinner fall. (The mayflies turn a rusty color at this stage hence the name.)

The pattern with sparkle wings was the hot call on Friday night, but Saturdays overcast, rainy weather apparently put a damper on the PMD hatch earlier in the day, and the evening spinner fall as well.

On the Fly: Hoppers and droppers

Dave Johnson, owner of Carbondale-based Independent Flyfishing Guides, reached on his boat during a float down the middle Roaring Fork River on Monday, had just released an 18- to 20-inch rainbow that rose to a hopper.

The hopper/dropper combo is a good bet on the Roaring Fork these days, according to Johnson, who recommends a small pheasant tail for the dropper (a small nymph trailing off a larger dry fly).

The Colorado River flowing through Glenwood Canyon remains chocolate brown, but the lower Fork is also producing trout in the net with a hopper/dropper combination, according to Drew Reid at Roaring Fork Anglers in Glenwood Springs. He suggested a small blue-wing olive nymph or emerger pattern for the dropper - a No. 18 or 20 RS-2 or a pheasant tail.

"If it's cloudy, we're throwing streamers and doing really well," Reid added.
