Fly Fishing Heals
Did you know that fly fishing can help the injured recover faster? Robert Streeter of the Times Union explains how fly fishing and fly tying are being used as therapuetic activities for our wounded soldiers returning from war. To read more about the fly fish healing programs visit The Times Union. Sometimes the big fish do not come to the angler, in which case the angler must come to them. One way to do this is to get out there on a kayak. Don Sapatkin of the Philadelphia Inquirer reports on the growing popularity of kayak fishing clubs and the benefits of fishing from the boat, www.philly.com. There were many new products showcased at the recent ICAST tackle show in Las Vegas, including the 1415 Z Series Reel and Rod case by Plano. This new hybrid case is lightweight, durable, and feautures enough interior space to accomodate two two-piece rods with reels attached.
On Pine, trout still plentiful on hot days
WELLSTON -- The middle of a hot summer is not especially the best time for trout fishing. Still, four of us were virtually rubbing our hands together and snickering over our prospects as we launched the boat on the Pine River here in the early morning. It was completely overcast and even intermittently raining. The weather gods were smiling upon us. Or so we thought. But at 9 a.m, after two hours of fishless angling, we had to reassess our mindset. I was tossing big Rapalas -- No. 11s or No. 13s -- out of the front of the drift boat with Bob Fisher, who is soon to become the former co-owner of Baldwin Bait and Tackle. His soon-to-be former partner, Steve Fraley, was switching off rowing and throwing streamers from the back of the rig with his soon-to-be new partner John Karakashian.
Like shooting fish in a barrell
I just got home from a week-long road trip and I think I may have found some of the best fishing on the planet. That is if you like yanking on halibut until your arms feel like they're full of wet cement and hooking so many coho salmon that it seems a little like bluegill fishing out of a 5-gallon bucket. And the best part of the deal is this angling paradise is relatively close. My base of operations was Juneau, Alaska which is a short three-hour flight from Sacramento, with a stop in Seattle. On assignment for Fish Alaska Magazine, my orders were to explore and report back on the fishing opportunities available in the waters within easy striking distance of Alaska's capital city.On day one, my assistant Khevin and I rented a car and buzzed around the Juneau road system, where we found massive amounts of salmon in all the small streams we visited, catching more than we could count on fly and conventional tackle.
