Angling for tourists: Hersey dam demolition to restore trout fishery

HERSEY - Hopes are the removal of an aging dam will provide a vital key in the survival of one local village.

Like many of the state's more than 2,000 dams, the Hersey River dam in the Village of Hersey was once a significant source of hydropower and important to the community's economic infrastructure.

Constructed in the 1930s, the dilapidated dam is now considered a public safety threat and detrimental to the environment. Its demolition and a river restoration are expected to play a significant role in reviving the community.

“The only business left downtown is the General Store," said Village President John Calabrese. “My feeling is if tourism and recreational opportunities on the river increase, it will inspire someone to reopen businesses and there will be enough people around to support them.

Mid-South Fishing Report

Pickwick Lake: Tommy Akin of Strike King Lure Company says the stripe fishing below Pickwick Dam has been excellent. Anglers are catching lots of fish during the heat of the day, bumping bottom with live skipjack. When the fish come to the surface during the evenings, Akin says, you can catch them on just about any kind of topwater bait or jerkbait. Fish in the 7-to-12-pound range have been common.

Reelfoot Lake: With water temps in the high 80s, fishing has been super slow. A few anglers are catching bluegill around shallow weeds on jigs tipped with wax worms. Catfishing is also fair with a few eating-size fish taking nightcrawlers in the ditches.

Herb Parsons Lake: Bank fishermen are catching a few decent catfish on chicken and turkey livers, but everything else is slow.

Lake Graham: Bass fishing is fair with trick worms and Zoom Super Flukes fished around the shallow cover just after sunrise and for about the last 90 minutes before dark.

Fishing Report: Hints of fall starting to show up, which bodes ...

Change is in the air. Ever so subtly, the dog days of summer are winding down. Though that proverbial hint of fall may not be in the air quite yet, the edge is off summer temperatures across much of the state and fishing is beginning to stir from its summer doldrums.

A pattern of afternoon rains has returned to much of Colorado. Rivers generally are flowing at or somewhat above normal levels for late August. The rains can temporarily discolor the water, but conditions otherwise are prime. Summertime hatches are coming off regularly, and terrestrial insects such as grasshoppers are readily available to the trout.

Spin-fishermen also are finding improved late-summer conditions, with trout active in riffles and pocket water, as well as the deeper pools.

Mountain creeks and beaver ponds are in prime condition, and late summer is a great time to visit the higher country.
