Angling for change
When are anglers more likely to catch trout, and with what success? According to the commissions study, anglers caught slightly more stocked fish after opening weekend than during the first-day crush. The catch rate was 1.0 trout per hour opening weekend and 1.13 fish per hour afterward. On wild trout streams, fishermen caught 1.76 brook trout per hour on small streams, 0.51 brookies per hour on large streams, and 0.56 brown trout per hour on large streams. Ken Undercoffer looks at the state's wild trout and sees enormous potential. "Devoted trout fishermen pursue them from early spring well into the fall, and sometimes even into winter," said Undercoffer, a former Greensburg resident who lives in Clearfield and serves as president of the Pennsylvania Council of Trout Unlimited.
More than just catching fish

That’s important, but it’s only a part of the reason why Grand Junction resident Carol Oglesby recently was honored with the Federation of Fly Fisher’s "Woman of the Year" award at the Federation’s annual conclave in Bozeman, Mont. The award is one of the "Big Three" given out each year by the FFF, along with the Man of the Year and the Buzz Buszek Award, given to someone in the fly-tying end of the sport. Among the past recipients of Woman of the Year honored are such illustrious fly fishers as Joan Wulff, Joan Whitlock, Maggie Merriman and Rhea Topping. The criteria in part require "outstanding contributions" that benefit the Federation on a national or international level.
Number of women fly fishing has gone up since 2003

It was in the 1400s that Dame Juliana Berners, preceding Izaak Walton by 200 years, published the essay, "A Treatyse of Fysshynge Wyth an Angle," (the Old English title) in which the good nun suggests that fishing with a rod and a line brings good spirits and enhances life. More and more, many of those anglers enjoying those good spirits and enhanced life are women. According to an Outdoor Industry Foundation study last year, there are nearly 3.5 million women who fly fish in the United States, up 200,000 since 2003. That’s welcome news to Robert Ramsay, president of the American Fly Fishers Trade Association.
