Fishing Flys

Fly fishing smallies in the fading summer

It's unbelievable how some years are dominated by certain types of fishing. Some years the surf is hot for stripers or blues. Some years trout fishing is hot in the streams. This year the hottest fishery going in freshwater is the smallmouth fishing in the rivers and streams throughout New Jersey.

While most fly fishermen consider fishing for trout the ultimate sport, one day with a good dose of bronzeback with a buggy whip just might make them think twice.

If I had to pick one fish that was my all-time favorite to catch, Ol' Mr. Bronzeback would be at the top of the list. Pound-for-pound, inch-for-inch, there is no better fighting fish to be found in the sweet water. While smallies are found both in the still waters of a lake or reservoir, they especially are feisty when they are found in the current environment of a river or large stream.

‘Goodby, God, I'm going to Bodie,' or ‘Good by God, I'm going ...

BODIE - About the same time each year for the past 14, a group of Hi-Desert athletes, this writer and his friend of almost 30 years, Dean Gill, an employee of the Eastern Municipal Water District set sail for the eastern High Sierra north of Bishop. We stay in a three-story town house in Mammoth Lakes, then travel to lakes and streams from the Virginia Lakes Loop on the north (occasionally Upper Twin Lake near Bridgeport) to Rock Creek and Rock Creek Lake on the south. It's a 10-day adventure that has seen a number of the young men who annually make the trip become outstanding fly fishermen - to the point where the movie “A River Runs Through It" is totally enjoyable.A Page From HistoryDuring the adventure we've dubbed the “Corps of Discovery," we take one day of the 10 to spend in the ghost town of Bodie. We discover annually that it wasn't trout fishing that resulted in the growth of this awesome area, but gold and silver discoveries that made many millionaires, while leaving so many with empty pockets.

Fly fishing rods are now available in raspberry

Standing on a rock outcropping that juts into Officer's Gulch Lake, Char Bloom resembled an orchestra conductor the moment before a concert. Instead of lifting a wand, though, she waved a fly fishing rod.

With an audience of women surrounding her, Bloom brought her rod back and then gracefully rocked it forward, throwing her line into the lake with just the perfect amount of arc. The fly gently landed on the tranquil lake, creating only the tiniest ripple.

"Make sure the fly hits the water first and not the rest of your line," Bloom said. "Otherwise, you'll scare the fish away."

Too late: The 17 female anglers watching Bloom were wearing jingling beads around their waists and they were decked out from head to toe in bright colors such as turquoise and hot pink. Their rods? Raspberry colored.
