Fishing Fly In Vacation

Fishing with Cataline

This fishing excursion follows in the tracks of the well-known trailbrazer and packer, known as Cataline. He was born Jean Caux, in the Catalonia region near the Spanish/French border, and blazed trails from central to northern British Columbia, Canada.

The numerous gold rushes and homesteaders kept him busy supplying their camps during the 1860's, when much of the country was untouched. He was able to experience an untouched wilderness full of fish and game.

This region still has some of the best rainbow trout fishing on the continent; moose, bear, caribou, mountain goats and sheep are plentiful too in this mountain region.

My recent excursion followed in his footsteps from Clinton, B.C., in the south to Babine Lake in the north. He traveled on foot with a pack train of as many as 80 mules, following old Indian and wild game trails where he could, and "bushwacked" where he couldn't.

Mid-South Fishing Report

Pickwick Lake: Tommy Akin of Strike King Lure Company says the stripe fishing below Pickwick Dam has been excellent. Anglers are catching lots of fish during the heat of the day, bumping bottom with live skipjack. When the fish come to the surface during the evenings, Akin says, you can catch them on just about any kind of topwater bait or jerkbait. Fish in the 7-to-12-pound range have been common.

Reelfoot Lake: With water temps in the high 80s, fishing has been super slow. A few anglers are catching bluegill around shallow weeds on jigs tipped with wax worms. Catfishing is also fair with a few eating-size fish taking nightcrawlers in the ditches.

Herb Parsons Lake: Bank fishermen are catching a few decent catfish on chicken and turkey livers, but everything else is slow.

Lake Graham: Bass fishing is fair with trick worms and Zoom Super Flukes fished around the shallow cover just after sunrise and for about the last 90 minutes before dark.

'Big Lake' fishing remains steady

Little has changed on the 'Big Lake' this week, as limit catches of king salmon, along with an occasional lake trout and steelhead, remain common.

Although a few nice catches were reported between Holland and Grand Haven, the better fishing has been near Muskegon, White Lake, Pentwater, Ludington and Manistee. Most of the fish are being taken 40-70 feet down, but with an east wind, that could quickly change.

Everyone seems to have a favorite spoon or fly, but some of the more productive patterns have been the Moonshine Lures in Flounder-Pounder or Spitfire, mixed veggies, Natural Born Killer (NBK) and the blue or green dolphin. Flasher-fly combos also have been effective with Pickled Sunshine, Snow Ghost and Little Bride being popular color patterns.

Downriggers have been used effectively in deep water, but lead-core, wire line and Dipsy/Slide Divers can be used when the boat traffic isn't heavy.
