Excellent Bass Fishing, Trout Fishing and some Walleye Fishing on ...
The "Grand River Rafting Company" offers guided drift boat fishing on platformed rafts down the Grand River in Paris, Ontario. Fishermen will find abundant smallmouth bass, fall/spring rainbow trout… as well as pike, walleye and big carp. All trips are very reasonably priced. A five hour guided fishing trip for two with lunch is $200 total with a platform raft. Drift boat rafting is the most satisfying experience for fishing the Grand & Nith Rivers. Two fishermen can stand on the platforms and do trout fly fishing or fly fishing for bass with lots of space. Or for those that bait cast, they can sit in deck chairs elevated above the water level to easily see striking fish. The best thing about raft platform fishing is that the speed of the raft allows excellent casting opportunities at each fishing pool.
On the Fly: Hoppers and droppers
Dave Johnson, owner of Carbondale-based Independent Flyfishing Guides, reached on his boat during a float down the middle Roaring Fork River on Monday, had just released an 18- to 20-inch rainbow that rose to a hopper.
The hopper/dropper combo is a good bet on the Roaring Fork these days, according to Johnson, who recommends a small pheasant tail for the dropper (a small nymph trailing off a larger dry fly).
The Colorado River flowing through Glenwood Canyon remains chocolate brown, but the lower Fork is also producing trout in the net with a hopper/dropper combination, according to Drew Reid at Roaring Fork Anglers in Glenwood Springs. He suggested a small blue-wing olive nymph or emerger pattern for the dropper - a No. 18 or 20 RS-2 or a pheasant tail.
"If it's cloudy, we're throwing streamers and doing really well," Reid added.
Fly fishermen love challenge of going after mahi-mahi
Of all the fish in the sea, for this guide, the mahi-mahi is the most thrilling to catch on the fly. Not the biggest or hardest fishing, mind you, but when I think of exciting, visual fly fishing, nothing can top the spectacular colors or leaps of the dolphin fish. This week, fly anglers from Manasquan to Cape May saw an influx of warm blue water in the 12- to 20-mile range. This is warm, crystal-clear blue water that spins off the Gulf Stream. With it, a plethora of open-sea species and life has made its way inshore, and the bulk of these fish have been 10- to 20-pound mahi-mahi, just perfect for the fly angler. When we are lucky enough to have this water quality inshore, fly anglers looking for mahi-mahi should focus their efforts around areas of visual structure.
