Fishing report for Aug. 25

EDITOR'S NOTE: Due to rapidly changing weather conditions in the Sierra and Northern Nevada, anglers are urged to call ahead to the sources listed at the end of each area description for reports on the latest road and water conditions.

FRENCHMAN LAKE: Fishing picked up over the last week. Limits of good-sized rainbows (14-16-inches) are being taken at Spring Creek, the boat ramp and the east end of the dam. Nightcrawlers are working best. Chartreuse Powerbait produced limits for a group of fishermen at Nightcrawler Bay, Turkey Point and Lunker Point. Catfish continue to be plentiful around the lake. Wiggin's Trading Post, (530) 993-4683. The Gilly, 358-6113.

DAVIS LAKE: Water temperatures are cooling and fishing is improving. The surface temperature was 69 degrees Wednesday and the fish were active.

Trout Grenobloise

Depending on the size of your trout, you may find that two people can share one. If it hasn't been filleted in advance, simply lift the crisp skin and slide the flesh off the bones with a fork to eat, being sure to get some sauce with each bite. Leftovers are delicious on sandwiches or in salad.

2/3 cup all-purpose flour Salt, to taste Pepper to taste 4 medium trout, cleaned (see note) 2 tablespoons olive oil 1/2 cup butter (1 stick) 1 cup cubed white bread, such as sourdough 2 lemons, zested and segmented (see note) 1 tablespoon capers 1 small bunch fresh parsley, chopped 1/2 bunch fresh tarragon, chopped

Place the flour in a shallow dish and season with salt and pepper. Lightly dredge the trout in the flour on both sides, inside and out. Heat the oil in a large skillet (you may need two skillets if the fish are large) over high heat and place the trout in skin side down.

Humans are well designed for an omnivorous diet

QLast weekend we had cottage guests. We knew they were vegetarians and prepared menus accordingly. All was well until I declared I was going fishing, and invited them to come. This led to a tirade on the evils of fishing — fish have rights too, they feel pain, yada, yada. I kind of lost it, and the rest of the weekend was frosty. Now I feel guilty — and haven't wet a line since! Do you think fishing is really mean, or bad ethics-wise?

AI shouldn't touch this one with a ten-foot fly rod. I'm a fisherman, and I eat the fish I catch. Yum! Moreover, the last time I dealt with a fish question (involving a Siamese fighter and a cat) I got more nasty letters than on any subject but gay marriage. But like a trout to the fly, I rise again.

Animal rights advocates usually begin with the claim that fish can feel pain.
