TROUT FISHING IN AMERICA: "My Best Day"
In the 30 years that Trout Fishing in America has been making children's music, bassist Keith Grimwood says one question always comes up: "What is the stupidest song you guys have ever written?" Turns out it's "Sailing," a clever little sea chanty that's big on wordplay. From a "dumb-floundered" pirate to "marooned" sailors aboard colliding cargo ships hauling red and brown paint, "Sailing" is just one of 15 songs featured on the thunderous concert CD from the smart, musically sophisticated duo of Grimwood and guitarist Ezra Idlet. Their collaboration on "My Best Day" is not to be missed. Recorded before a live audience in Arkansas earlier this year, the album is steeped in the acoustic folk tradition. Chubs making a comeback at Strawberry
During the C.A.S.T. (Catch a Special Thrill) event held on Strawberry this past Saturday, I had the opportunity to take a look at the chub population in the Soldier Creek portion -- and the picture wasn't a pretty one. "We've been catching fish right and left," said George Sommer, current president of the TBF Bass Federation, "but all we've caught are adult chubs." It was a fact that the area Sommer and his C.A.S.T. participants were fishing showed a water column littered with adult chubs, that swarmed each bait as it fell towards the bottom. "We thought the cuts (cutthroats) would be biting," continued Sommer, "but we can't seem to get through all the chubs." The same story was repeated several times Saturday. Each time I approached a boat, my fish finder came alive with schools of chubs, which were confirmed as I moved slowly through the shallows so that the chubs became visible to the naked eye.

The recently released flim, Jindabyne, is an adaptation of Raymond Carver's short story So Much Water, So Close to Home, about a group of fishermen who discover the dead body of a woman floating in the river. Instead of doing something with the body, the men mysteriously decide to leave the body while they continue to fish. When the men finally return home to Jindabyne, and report finding the body, all hell breaks loose. The fishermen, their wives and their children are suddenly haunted by their own bad spirits. As public opinion builds against the actions of the men, their certainty about themselves and the decision they made at the river is challenged. Jindabyne casts Laura Linney, Gabriel Byrne, Deborra-Lee Furness, John Howard and Leah Purcell. It was directed by Australian, Ray Lawrence and produced by April Films.
