Kingennie return provides some testing encounters

IT'S been some time since I last visited Forbes of Kingennie in Dundee and what a transformation - it has been turned into a complete fishing village. Apart from the specimen pond, my own personal favourite, there are several other ponds which include game and coarse angling.

Although by no means big, the specimen pond can be quite a testing casting experience for the less able of anglers but cooler conditions and clear water have made the trout start to chase the odd lure once again.

Utah's Game Fish: Lake Trout

The lake trout, or mackinaw trout, comes in a wide range of colors, from gray to brown to dark green. The distinguishing feature is the light yellowish or white spots that cover the body, from head to tail, and dorsal and tail fins. The other fins are unmarked and lined with white. The tail is sharply forked.

Characteristics

The lake trout grows and matures more slowly than other fish. After one year they are about six inches in length and when mature range between 19 and 23 inches, usually at the age of four to five. Typically, lake trout run between 5 and 30 pounds. The world record is 72 pounds. The Utah record is 51 pounds, 8 ounces, and was caught in 1988 in Flaming Gorge Reservoir. Smaller lake trout make excellent meals. Larger fish tend to take on an oily taste.

Utah's game fish: Rainbow trout

Coloration can vary. Most mature rainbows, however, have a distinguishable red or pink streak on their side from head to tail. The body is a gray-blue or olive above the lateral line and a silver color below. The body, dorsal fin and tail have black or brown dots. Wild rainbow will often have white-tipped fins.

Characteristics

Rainbow trout tend to be shallow to mid-depth "bottom feeders," which makes them easier for shore anglers to catch. They also feed year-round and are a favorite target of ice fishermen. This is probably the most popular fish in the trout family, because it is typically easier to catch, has exceptional strength and is noted for its showy jumping. And, as with all trout, its culinary qualities are excellent. The rainbow, however, does not compete well with other fish, particularly the Utah chub.
