Truckee a tough river to fish
The Truckee River can be a very humbling river to fish. I moved to Truckee in 1978 and tried to learn to fly fish by teaching myself. Neither that method or the river were particularly good choices for a beginner. I never did master the river as a fly angler, although I was able to do well fishing with crawdad imitating plugs. I moved to the west side of the Sierra in 1981 and I have continued to fish the Truckee and keep in contact with locals who fish it regularly. Part of the reason that the Truckee can be so difficult is the water temperature cycle through the season. Starting opening day in April, the flows are fishable, but the water temperatures are too cold for good fishing. As the season warms and the snows melt, the river runs high and cold.
Tiny Craig finds prosperity as outsiders chase trout
CRAIG, Mont.- The midafternoon heat is intense in this little town, and the fishing is a little slow. But Mike Bushly is still upbeat. There's air conditioning inside The Trout Shop, an emporium loaded with cool fishing stuff - flyrods, vests, waders, flies, ventilated clothing and a well-stocked deli offering drinks, sandwiches and chilled salads. Even the thick fleece-lined jackets have a perverse retail appeal. And Bushly has plenty more reasons not to sweat. The shop and the small community that surrounds it are awash in anglers ready to spend cold cash chasing big trout."This is our Christmas right now," Bushly said. .
Going fishing in the fall
I can hardly believe the calender! Summer is rapidly coming to a close and fall fishing is right around the corner. I do not know if it is me or if time just seems to be passing by very quickly these days. As I sit here at my computer writing this, I am a week away from another milestone in my life. After working for 34 and a half years, the last 29 here for Placer County, I am retiring from my real job. On Friday, September 1st, I will be walking out of an office that has been my workplace since I moved up here in 1977. It will seem strange and I certainly will miss my co-workers whom I also consider good friends. I wonder just how much my life will change without my regular job. There will be a little more time for fishing and a little golf. Perhaps a part-time job doing something that I like or that would get me some golfing or skiing privileges might be something that I will do.
