Tiny Craig finds prosperity as outsiders chase trout

CRAIG, Mont.- The midafternoon heat is intense in this little town, and the fishing is a little slow. But Mike Bushly is still upbeat. There's air conditioning inside The Trout Shop, an emporium loaded with cool fishing stuff - flyrods, vests, waders, flies, ventilated clothing and a well-stocked deli offering drinks, sandwiches and chilled salads. Even the thick fleece-lined jackets have a perverse retail appeal. And Bushly has plenty more reasons not to sweat. The shop and the small community that surrounds it are awash in anglers ready to spend cold cash chasing big trout."This is our Christmas right now," Bushly said. .

Catch a tagged trout and have the chance to be a millionaire

Labor Day Weekend, visitors to Mammoth Lakes, Calif. will be able to enjoy live bluegrass, country and classical music, a kids' fishing pond, kids' fishing games, T-shirt painting, trout cooking demonstrations, the Festival of Fine Art, and the second annual Million Dollar Trout Competition, which will be held on Sept. 2-3-4.

Mammoth Lakes is located just off of U.S. 395, about 120 miles south of Carson City and about 40 miles north of Bishop.

That Million Dollar Trout Competition is produced by the Town of Mammoth Lakes in co-operation with Mono County Tourism, the Mammoth Art Guild, and the Calif. Dept. of Fish and Game.

If you like to fish, all you have to do is pay $25 to enter that competition and try to catch a tagged trout at a number of different locations in that general area of California.

Trout blamed for too much

WITH the new trout fishing season upon us, I think that my recent discovery is timely.

Among some old papers which were stacked in a box under my house, I found a report concerning the native spotted tree frog, Litorea spenceri, which was threatened with extinction some time before 1990, although the report I have is dated 1997.

The main theme of the report was that these threatened frogs were declining in numbers as a result of being eaten by rainbow trout.

To help the dwindling frog numbers there was a scheme afoot, involving the Victorian Government and then Department of Environment, to withdraw or eradicate rainbow trout from streams in the Mt Buffalo National Park in particular, in an effort to halt this alarming decline in frog numbers.

Both rainbow trout and brown trout are exotic fish species, being introduced into Australia from the US and England respectively in the late 19th century.
