Conditions right for fly fishing
The lower main-stem Skagit from about Sedro Woolley down, and its South Fork, are producing some nice fish, according to Bob Ferber at Holiday Market Sports in Burlington (360-757-4361), along with a few smaller Dolly Varden. Fly fishermen are scoring on yellow or black number 6 Knudson spiders, bucktail coachmen, and various minnow-imitating patterns, Ferber said. Popular spin-type lures include number 1 or 2 Mepps or Vibrax spinners in reds, chartareuse, brass/red and small Dick Nite spoons with a light split shot. Worms are always popular. "With the river as clear as it is right now, flies and hardware will probably outfish bait," Ferber said. "And you want to look for 'softer' water than you would fish for steelhead - the current edges, eddy edges, sloughs, and snaggy spots. Basically off to the edges of the main river." There's a rough launch for small boats near the Conway bridge, he said; one above Gardner Bar on the upstream edge of Burlington, off Gardner Road; and one below the bridge in downtown old Mount Vernon, above the forks and above Spud Bar.
Trout fishing in Missouri without a Ph.D
Though I am not an avid, or should I say a rabid trout nut, I do enjoy fishing for them and caught the bug when I was in high school. Myself and a couple of friends used to head out on a Friday or Saturday night for Roaring River down by Cassville on Highway 112. After running around in Cassville in the evening, we would finally get to Roaring River and all three of us would sleep in the cab of a 70-something Chevy pickup that one of my buddies owned. Somehow we were always ready by the time the horn blew at too-early-thirty in the morning. Sometimes we would have good luck and sometimes we didnt. We always had a great time though. Missouri has many trout parks spread throughout the state. All are beautiful and a great place to take the family for a daylong picnic or even a vacation.
Excellent Bass Fishing, Trout Fishing and some Walleye Fishing on ...
The "Grand River Rafting Company" offers guided drift boat fishing on platformed rafts down the Grand River in Paris, Ontario. Fishermen will find abundant smallmouth bass, fall/spring rainbow trout… as well as pike, walleye and big carp. All trips are very reasonably priced. A five hour guided fishing trip for two with lunch is $200 total with a platform raft. Drift boat rafting is the most satisfying experience for fishing the Grand & Nith Rivers. Two fishermen can stand on the platforms and do trout fly fishing or fly fishing for bass with lots of space. Or for those that bait cast, they can sit in deck chairs elevated above the water level to easily see striking fish. The best thing about raft platform fishing is that the speed of the raft allows excellent casting opportunities at each fishing pool.
