FISHING REPORT

Galveston Fishing Pier reported flat, sandy water most of the day. Fishing was on the slow side overall, but anglers throwing cut bait from the T-head had fair numbers of reds, including a mix of keepers and oversized throwbacks, along with a few sharks. If water greens, watch for a quick run of speckled trout.

Native brook trout are in hot water

My first brook trout arrived on a frosty late-spring morning in mountain water so cold it made my fingers tingle before going completely numb.

No bigger than my hand, the brookie was a work of art to rival New Hampshire's Chocorua Lake, its home just before I enticed it to swallow my fly and to which I would return it moments later.

Its olive skin peppered with blue-ringed red dots and a rakish orange belly is a vivid image that has stayed with me for more than 25 years. If I had a lick of artistic ability, I could draw that fish from memory.

Since arriving here 18 years ago, my encounters with brookies have been fewer and farther between. Some of that has to do with the other fish that occupy my time: white perch, croaker and, of course, striped bass. (Let's not even mention menhaden, OK?)

But even when I've carved out the time, it's been hard to do a meet-and-greet with Maryland's only native trout.

FWP, county agree on pond plan

The Lewis and Clark County Commission on Tuesday approved a plan for the management and future improvements at the pond and agreed with a state Fish, Wildlife and Parks official who suggested the creation of a citizens advisory council to ensure those upgrades move forward. The plan, drafted by an advisory committee created by the commission, calls for improvements to the pond's water intake system; limiting domesticated ducks and geese to three breeding pairs apiece plus their offspring; installing new signage and garbage cans; removing of asphalt near the water's edge; and the possible construction of a fishing dock, among other improvements. It allows the continued use of the pond for youth fishing, although young anglers would be limited to the north end of the 1.6-acre water hole. FWP Resource Program Manager Mike Korn said rainbow trout will continue to be stocked yearly.
