Beginner Fly Fishing

Hopper time

I put on my waders, my felt-soled boots and a fleece vest because it felt a little bit cool when I got to the Oldman River.

The sky was cloudy, threatening rain. A chilly breeze was sweeping down the valley from the west.

But within 20 minutes I was sweating like I was in the tropics, the breeze had stopped and the sun had popped out from behind the clouds.

I should have known. Summer might be winding down, but it ain't done yet.

I'd come down to the Oldman River below the Three Rivers Dam to try a bit of late-afternoon grasshopper fishing. No, not fishing for grasshoppers. I mean using big flies imitating grasshoppers to fool some trout into playing with me for a bit.

It's the time of year for grasshoppers along the river banks to start leaping and flying around looking for mates.

Eating fish wherever you go

North Atlantic salmon served with parsley potatoes at a small inn on the West Coast of Scotland. Rainbow trout cooked over a campfire by a mountain stream. Grilled whitefish on a deck overlooking Lake Michigan. Your memory is no doubt filled with pleasurable fish moments. And eating fish is a healthy pleasure.Citing a solid body of research showing people who eat fish regularly have a reduced incidence of death from heart attack and stroke, American Heart Association recommends Americans eat fish at least twice every week.Dietitians always have cited fish as a good source of low-fat protein, and recent research indicates fatty fish such salmon, tuna and halibut may offer even more important health benefits. These fish contain significant quantities of omega-3 fatty acids. Two specific types of omega-3s-eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA)-are particularly beneficial to the cardiovascular system, lowering triglycerides and reducing the inflammation that is frequently involved in heart disease.

Fly fishing rods are now available in raspberry

Standing on a rock outcropping that juts into Officer's Gulch Lake, Char Bloom resembled an orchestra conductor the moment before a concert. Instead of lifting a wand, though, she waved a fly fishing rod.

With an audience of women surrounding her, Bloom brought her rod back and then gracefully rocked it forward, throwing her line into the lake with just the perfect amount of arc. The fly gently landed on the tranquil lake, creating only the tiniest ripple.

"Make sure the fly hits the water first and not the rest of your line," Bloom said. "Otherwise, you'll scare the fish away."

Too late: The 17 female anglers watching Bloom were wearing jingling beads around their waists and they were decked out from head to toe in bright colors such as turquoise and hot pink. Their rods? Raspberry colored.
