Angling for change
When are anglers more likely to catch trout, and with what success? According to the commissions study, anglers caught slightly more stocked fish after opening weekend than during the first-day crush. The catch rate was 1.0 trout per hour opening weekend and 1.13 fish per hour afterward. On wild trout streams, fishermen caught 1.76 brook trout per hour on small streams, 0.51 brookies per hour on large streams, and 0.56 brown trout per hour on large streams. Ken Undercoffer looks at the state's wild trout and sees enormous potential. "Devoted trout fishermen pursue them from early spring well into the fall, and sometimes even into winter," said Undercoffer, a former Greensburg resident who lives in Clearfield and serves as president of the Pennsylvania Council of Trout Unlimited.
FWP, county agree on pond plan
The Lewis and Clark County Commission on Tuesday approved a plan for the management and future improvements at the pond and agreed with a state Fish, Wildlife and Parks official who suggested the creation of a citizens advisory council to ensure those upgrades move forward.The plan, drafted by an advisory committee created by the commission, calls for improvements to the pond's water intake system; limiting domesticated ducks and geese to three breeding pairs apiece plus their offspring; installing new signage and garbage cans; removing of asphalt near the water's edge; and the possible construction of a fishing dock, among other improvements.It allows the continued use of the pond for youth fishing, although young anglers would be limited to the north end of the 1.6-acre water hole. FWP Resource Program Manager Mike Korn said rainbow trout will continue to be stocked yearly.
Chubs making a comeback at Strawberry
During the C.A.S.T. (Catch a Special Thrill) event held on Strawberry this past Saturday, I had the opportunity to take a look at the chub population in the Soldier Creek portion -- and the picture wasn't a pretty one. "We've been catching fish right and left," said George Sommer, current president of the TBF Bass Federation, "but all we've caught are adult chubs." It was a fact that the area Sommer and his C.A.S.T. participants were fishing showed a water column littered with adult chubs, that swarmed each bait as it fell towards the bottom. "We thought the cuts (cutthroats) would be biting," continued Sommer, "but we can't seem to get through all the chubs." The same story was repeated several times Saturday. Each time I approached a boat, my fish finder came alive with schools of chubs, which were confirmed as I moved slowly through the shallows so that the chubs became visible to the naked eye.
