TROUT FISHING IN AMERICA: "My Best Day"
In the 30 years that Trout Fishing in America has been making children's music, bassist Keith Grimwood says one question always comes up: "What is the stupidest song you guys have ever written?" Turns out it's "Sailing," a clever little sea chanty that's big on wordplay. From a "dumb-floundered" pirate to "marooned" sailors aboard colliding cargo ships hauling red and brown paint, "Sailing" is just one of 15 songs featured on the thunderous concert CD from the smart, musically sophisticated duo of Grimwood and guitarist Ezra Idlet. Their collaboration on "My Best Day" is not to be missed. Recorded before a live audience in Arkansas earlier this year, the album is steeped in the acoustic folk tradition. At the same time, it expands into .
Chuck Scates the coast buster
If you want the skinny on shallow-water fishing in Texas, just ask Chuck Scates. Scates has been prowling the flats around Rockport for 24 years. He was one of the first fly-fishing guides in Texas – maybe the first. Scates will be doing seminars at Cabela's Fort Worth on Sept. 9-10. One thing he's learned after thousands of days on the water: A short, accurate cast beats a long cast that's not so accurate. "Redfish feed with their tails up and their heads down," Scates said. "We get very close to a lot of fish. The key is to put that fly right in front of the fish's nose. I tell customers to hit them in the head. If the fly isn't right next to the fish's face, you probably won't catch that fish." Scates' clients have a lot of days when they cast to 30 or more schools in water that's a foot deep or less.
Utah's game fish: Rainbow trout
Coloration can vary. Most mature rainbows, however, have a distinguishable red or pink streak on their side from head to tail. The body is a gray-blue or olive above the lateral line and a silver color below. The body, dorsal fin and tail have black or brown dots. Wild rainbow will often have white-tipped fins. Characteristics Rainbow trout tend to be shallow to mid-depth "bottom feeders," which makes them easier for shore anglers to catch. They also feed year-round and are a favorite target of ice fishermen. This is probably the most popular fish in the trout family, because it is typically easier to catch, has exceptional strength and is noted for its showy jumping. And, as with all trout, its culinary qualities are excellent. The rainbow, however, does not compete well with other fish, particularly the Utah chub.
